SSC CGPE-Introduction
The Combined Graduate Level Examination is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for recruitment to various subordinate services like:
(a) Assistants Grade [Group `B' Non-Gazetted) for the groups of services/offices like AFHQ CSS, Railway Board, IFS (B) and Posts in offices like Research Designs & Standards Organization, Central Vigilance Commission, etc.
(b) Inspector of Posts (Group `B' Non-Gazetted)
(c) Inspectors of Central Excise, Income Tax, Preventive Officer in Custom Houses, Assistant Enforcement Officers, etc.
(d) Sub-Inspectors in CBI.
(e) Sub-Inspectors of Police in Central Police Organizations, [BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP),
(f) Divisional Accountants/Auditors/Junior Accountants/ UDCs, in various Central Government Departments.
Eligibility
Age:
Candidate's age must lie between (a) 20 to 27 years for Assistant Grade & SIs in CBI (b) 18 to 27 years for inspectors of CE/IT & Div. Acctts/Auditors/UDCs, etc., (c) 20 to 25 years for SIs in CPOs on the first day of the August of the year of Examination.
The upper age limit may be relaxed in respect of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and such other categories of person as may, from time to time, notified in the behalf by the Government of India to the extent and subject to the conditions notified in respect of each categories.
Educational Qualification:
Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
Application
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Graduate Preliminary Examination once a year for selection of candidates for the main Examination. Candidates declared by the commission to have qualified for admission to the Main Examination on the basis of this combined preliminary examination will have to apply again with requisite fees in the prescribed application form which will be send to such qualified candidates by the concerned regional offices of the commission. Blank application forms and other particulars are published in the 'Employment News'.
How to apply : Application either by Regd Post/Speed Post/UPC must be submitted at the address shown in column against the selection centre selected by the candidate from the list of centres given below. The application must be submitted in the prescribed format. Click here for the application format. Application format must be neatly typed on white paper (fullscape size) in double space and typed on only one side of the paper. Candidates can either use the Blank application forms published in the Employment News as such.
Plan of Examination
The exam is held in two phases. The first phase of the exam is called the Preliminary Examination. Those who qualify in the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear in the Mains.
Preliminary Examination (objective type):
The Combined Preliminary Examination will be of a Test for selection of candidates for the Main Examination for the different categories of posts, mentioned in the first paragraphs, and would comprise the following subjects:

Note: (i) All the question papers for the main examination will be of conventional essay type.
(ii) All the question papers except that of Paper I and Paper II will be printed both in English and in Hindi. Only those candidates who qualify in all the papers as well as in the aggregate would be eligible to be considered for being called for the personality test which will carry a maximum of 100 marks for all candidates.
(iii) Paper I will be compulsory for all the candidates. However, this will be of qualifying nature only for the candidates who are opting for the post of Assistants. (For candidates who are opting for the post of Assistants, the marks secured in this paper will not be counted for preparation of the final select list. The commission shall have the discretion to fix the qualifying standard in this paper. Scripts of the remaining papers will be evaluated only of those candidates who secure the minimum qualifying standard in Paper I of the Main Examination.)
(iv) Candidates will have the option to answer Paper III, Paper IV and Paper V either in Hindi or English. Medium opted in Preliminary Examination (Hindi or English) will remain the same in Main Examination.
Syllabus
General Intelligence and Reasoning:
It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This component will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning, etc.
General Awareness:
Questions will be aimed at testing the candidate's general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person.
The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries, especially pertaining to history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity, scientific research, etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
Arithmetic:
This part will include questions on problems relating to number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit & loss, discount, use of table and graphs, mensuration, time & distance, ratio and time, etc.
